Over the Counter Medications that are Safe to Take During Pregnancy

This is a list of some of the medications that are safe for you to use when you’re pregnant. Take only the amount of medication directed. Too much may not be good for you.


A.  COLD AND SINUS RELIEF

  • Sudafed/Sudafed Plus

  • Robitussin (without alcohol)

  • Tylenol Cold

  • Tylenol Allergy

  • Tylenol Flu

  • Tylenol Sinus

  • Tylenol

  • Actifed

  • Claritin


B.  COUGH MEDICATIONS

  • Robitussin CF

  • Robitussin DM

  • Robitussin

  • Mucinex


C.  CONSTIPATION

  • 8 glasses of water and exercise

  • Fruit

  • Metamucil

  • Colace/Surfak/Correctol

  • Dulcolax

  • Milk of Magnesia


D.  DIARRHEA

  • Regular Imodium AD(Regular Imodium AD [Loperamide HCl] only, do not use the Multisymptom

Relief containing simethicone)


E.  HEADACHES

  • Tylenol (including extra-strength)

  • Tylenol Sinus

  • Tylenol Allergy


F.   HEMORRHOIDS

  • Anusol HC

  • Preparation H (cream of suppositories)

  • Tucks or Witch Hazel soaks

  • Dibucaine


G.  INDIGESTION/HEARTBURN

  • Maalox

  • Mylanta

  • Tums

  • Rolaids

  • Zantac 150 mg. twice per day

  • Pepcid 40 mg daily


H.  NAUSEA/VOMITTING

  • Frequent, lighter meals

  • Increase carbohydrate intake (i.e. potatoes, pasta, rice, breads)

  • Eating crackers before getting out of bed in the morning

  • Ginger-lemon tea (see recipe at the end of nutrition section), ginger snaps, ginger ale, peppermint

  • Spacing out solids and liquids by 30 minutes


I.    SORE THROAT

  • Cepacol

  • Sucrets

Salt Water gargle (1 tsp. salt in 1 cup warm water, gargle, and spit out)
